L.A. IS DESIGNATED BY CALIFORNIA. AS 'PROHOUSING,' COUNTY
The state and Governor Gavin Newsom have formally designated California's most populated county as a "prohousing" community.
Newsom revealed on Friday that eleven communities—including the entirety of Los Angeles County—had been awarded the title.
According to officials, the distinction is granted to municipalities that are actively working to reduce red tape, lower development and construction costs, and create housing policies with a "growth mindset" in order to help address the state's urgent demand for housing.
Apart from L.A. Prohousing was assigned to the following cities in Los Angeles County: Berkeley, Brea, Crescent City, Fairfield, Pinole, Rancho Cucamonga, Richmond, South Lake Tahoe, and West Hollywood.
The California Department of Housing and Community Development's director, Gustavo Velasquez, stated that a "strong, demonstrated commitment to tearing down barriers and working to create more housing, faster" is necessary in order to receive the prohousing certification.
Earlier this year, Santa Monica, San Luis Obispo and Tulare County were among seven communities to receive the prohousing designation.
Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles city, Riverside, San Diego city and county, and Sacramento city and county are among the largest and most populous communities that are considered by the state to be prohousing.
By 2030, the state of California wants to have built 2.5 million additional dwellings. One million or more of the residences must be expressly classified as "affordable."
According to the Governor's Office, "local governments must actively work to implement state housing laws and adhere to best practices that surpass the minimum requirements in order to achieve this crucial goal."
